The cowboy needs his lasso, particularly during the rodeo where he throws it over the head of an animal. The lasso was originally made of thin braided lines of raw cow hide. The preparation was complicated because you had to wet the ropes and then turn them again and again while they dried. Unfortunately, these ropes were not very stable and broke under heavy use. It had to be handled very carefully.
